Kansas football edge transferring to HBCU champion

HBCU national champion Florida A&M just picked up a commitment from a former Kansas football player.

Davion Westmoreland has announced his commitment to FAMU following a stint with Kansas football.

Westmoreland hails from Griffin (GA) High School, where he advanced to the state playoffs in each of his four seasons with the program. He then went to Hutchinson Junior College, where he became a three-star prospect – ranking 34th overall in his class. He was ranked fifth amongst JUCO edge players and 11th in Georgia.

Florida A&M,

Westmoreland played two seasons at Hutchinson, playing in 19 total games. He had 89 tackles in his career with 17 tackles-for-loss and 7.5 sacks, to go with three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one interception. He was named second-team all-conference as a sophomore in 2021, and totaled 54 tackles in 11 games with 11.5 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks.

He had offers from Appalachian State, Middle Tennessee State, North Alabama and Southeast Missouri State but ultimately choose to commit to Kansas in May 2022.

Westmoreland would go on to play 12 games in a Kansas football uniform, totaling six tackles overall. He hit the transfer portal following spring camp.

He now finds himself on a new-look Florida A&M team that has lost several key defenders from last season’s SWAC and HBCU national championship-winning team. One of the big holes left was by edge rusher Anthony Dunn, who has gone on to Marshall. Those are big shoes to fill, but Westmoreland will have his chance.
