HBCU signs Big Ten men’s basketball transfer

Big Ten men’s basketball transfer Jahnathan Lamothe from the University of Maryland has signed on to play with HBCU North Carolina A&T for the upcoming season.

Lamothe is a 6 foot 4 inch combo guard from Baltimore, Maryland who was a former four-star recruit in high school. The No. 3 recruit in Maryland for the 2023 class was ranked as high as No. 122 nationally before committing to the University of Maryland over Georgetown, UCF, and Penn State.

The former member of Kevin Durant’s “Team Durant,” AAU team finished his high school career at St. Francis Academy with over 1,000 career points, averaging 20 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals per game, including a school-record 57-point performance with another school record 16 three-pointers, against rival John Carroll.

As a freshman at the University of Maryland, Jahnathan Lamothe averaged almost seven minutes of playing time in his 16 games as a Terripin, scoring a season-high 10 points in a December matchup with Alcorn University.

Lamothe announced his intent to leave UMD and enter the transfer portal with a message on his social media accounts.

“Thank you to the coaches and players for making my first year memorable, after prayer and talks with my family I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility thank you terp nation and wish yall nun but the best,” he posted.

Inside MD Sports, a 24/7 Sports blog dedicated to the University of Maryland athletics wrote that the Terps saw two-thirds of its freshman class leave after they “struggled to adapt to college basketball, like most Big Ten freshmen this season in the increasingly veteran conference.”

North Carolina A&T men’s basketball finished the season with a 7-25 overall record in their first season under head coach Monté Ross. who spoke to his desire to get players like Jahnathan Lamothe at the HBCU for the 2024-2025 season, “We will have an opportunity to recruit now and bring some guys in,” coach Ross told the school’s media department after their season ended in the first round of the CAA tournament.
