ACC women’s basketball transfer lands at HBCU

Florida A&M women’s basketball just landed a former ACC basketball player via the transfer portal.

Former Syracuse guard Cheyenne McEvans has committed to Florida A&M.

“Spent two days with an amazing woman,” Tarrence McEvans, Cheyenne’s father, wrote on Facebook. “Coach Bridgette Gordon and her staff!!! Thanks for giving Cheyenne an opportunity to help lead FAMU to a SWAC Championship.”

The Detroit, MI native had a standout career at Southfield A&T High School where she finished with 1,500 career points. She helped lead the Warriors to four straight OAA League Championships, two district championships and a state Final Four. McEvans was a two-time member of the Associated Press Division 1 All-State Team, named to the All-North First Team as a senior. She finished her high school career as a three-time All-League selection.

McEvans started her career at Buffalo, where she was named to the All-MAC Rookie team. Her sophomore season was cut short by injuries prior to her hitting the transfer portal and landing at Syracuse. She appeared in 17 games before a season-ending injury against Boston College during the 2022-2023 season, and averaged 2.8 points per game and 1.8 rebounds. McEvans didn’t play at all last season for the ACC squad.

After hitting the transfer portal, the 5’9 senior guard has found a new home in Tallahassee, FL as FAMU looks to build off a season in which it made its first trip to the SWAC basketball tournament in its brief stint in the league under Bridgette Gordon.
