Howard University women’s basketball has landed a former player from the University of Kentucky. Zennia Thomas, listed as a forward, announced on Instagram that she was choosing the Bison after entering the transfer portal from KU.
Thomas played 17 games over two seasons for the Wildcats. During her sophomore year she averaged 2.0 points and 1.7 rebounds per game before being dismissed from the team for undisclosed disciplinary reasons after seven games.
Thomas arrived to Kentucky as a highly touted recruit out of high school, averaging 30 points and 14 rebounds a game during her senior year at Warrensville Heights in Ohio. She chose Kentucky over offers from Purdue and Arizona State.
She addressed her dismissal from the Kentucky program and her intention to enter the portal on March 18 via Instagram.
“I’ve had time to reflect, redirect, and grow from this experience,” said Thomas. “I’m focused and ready to build on my gift and talents. I am fully committed to the path God has in front of me. This unexpected journey has inspired a desire for personal awareness and a fresh start. I am extremely grateful for the exposure and knowledge I received at the University of Kentucky. I look forward to being a welcomed addition to my future coaches and teammates.”
Howard University basketball finished 15-16 overall in the 2023-24 season, losing in the MEAC Women’s Championship game 51-46 to Norfolk State. Howard was 10-4 in the conference.
HU is slated to return Tyanna Walker as its star for next season. Walker was the MEAC Rookie of the Year and All MEAC First Team selection averaging 11.3 points per game while shooting 31 percent on three pointers.
