Zaay Green makes it clear she isn’t going to Alabama A&M

Zaay Green won’t join Dawn Thornton at Alabama A&M due to certain circumstances but appreciates her time at UAPB.

Yes — Zaay Green is in the transfer portal and no — she isn’t going to be following Dawn Thornton to Alabama A&M.

Green’s announcement on social media comes days after Thornton resigned her post at UAPB to take over at Alabama A&M University. There had been speculation as to whether or not Green would follow her coach to her new SWAC destination — but that was all put to rest on Tuesday.

Green issued a statement thanking her coaches and supporters at UAPB — as well as Thornton. But she made it clear she will not be going to AAMU.

“Unfortunately I will not be following her to Alabama A&M due to certain circumstances that had happened during the season,” Zaay Green wrote. “ However I will forever have love for my HBCU and I want to thank the fans, and the administrators that supported the team this whole year. I couldn’t be even more happier that I was able to receive my bachelors degree while attending this University.”

The former Power Five player had a stellar showing this past season at UAPB, averaging 16.7 points per game. She averaged 19.2 points per game in non-conference play, scoring better than 20 points six times, including 26 and 25 points against Oregon State and Oregon.

The Duncanville, Texas native was a five-star recruit, ranked No. 10 overall and No. 2 as a guard in the HoopGurlz espnW Top 100. Green started her career at Tennessee where she finished the 2018-19 season with an SEC All-Freshman Team selection as she averaged 9.6 points while hauling in four rebounds and dishing out 2.3 assists per game in 32 games and was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice.

Her sophomore season was cut short in 2019-2020 and she transferred to Texas A&M. Green spent one season at Texas A&M where she averaged 2.9 points per game on a .390 shooting percentage in limited minutes.

Green landed at UAPB for the 2021-2022 season, averaging 15.8 points per game. She missed the 2022-2023 season due to an injury and came back this year as an All SWAC first team selection.

Now Zaay Green will hit the NCAA Transfer portal where she could very well end up back at the Power Five level.
