Washington Commanders Local Pro Day Showcases HBCU Talent

As the football world continues to recognize the contributions of HBCUs, the presence of these standout players underscores the enduring legacy of these institutions in shaping the future of the game.

The Washington Commanders recently hosted their local pro day, spotlighting 20 athletes with ties to the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. Among them, three standout HBCU football players got their shot to impress the pro scouts, underscoring the significance of these institutions in football.

Darrian Brokenburr, a forceful defensive lineman from Howard University, emerged as a standout with his imposing presence on the field. Recognized as a first-team, all-Mid-Eastern Athletic Association pick, Brokenburr’s journey includes invitations to events like the 2024 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl and the 2024 NFL HBCU Combine. He played a pivotal role in Howard’s first-ever trip to the Cricket Celebration Bowl, a significant milestone for the program.

Anim Dankwah, the towering offensive tackle from Howard University, commanded attention with his physical prowess at the local pro day. Throughout his collegiate career, Dankwah amassed accolades, including selections to the MEAC All-Conference Second Team and the Phil Steele FCS All-MEAC Third Team in 2021. His crucial contributions to Howard’s championship run, securing a share of the MEAC regular-season championship in 2022 and reclaiming the title in 2023, solidified his legacy as a standout offensive lineman.

Jordan Toles, the standout safety from Morgan State University, showcased his playmaking abilities and garnered attention for his stellar performances. Notably, he earned recognition as a 2nd Annual Aeneas Williams Award semifinalist for his impactful contributions to the Bears’ defense. Leading the MEAC in interceptions further cemented Toles’ status among the nation’s top defensive backs in HBCU Division I college football.
