Jackson State expected to put up big money to keep Tomekia Reed

Tomekia Reed may move on but Jackson State isn’t just letting her walk away.

Jackson State is prepared to offer Reed a four-year deal worth one million dollars, according to a report by the Clarion Ledger. That would mean a $115k per year raise for Reed, who currently makes $135k.

Reed’s contract with Jackson State, extended in 2020, expired on Sunday, March 31. It was the end of the month in which she led JSU to its fifth-consecutive regular season SWAC basketball title and its third SWAC Tournament and NCAA appearance. Her team went perfect in SWAC play to earn a no. 14 seed for the second time in three seasons, earning her praise from UConn head coach Geno Auriemma after their first round game.

“Going undefeated in your league – I don’t care what league you play in or who you play against. You play 18 conference games and you win them all, and you win your conference tournament – that’s a helluva job,” Auriemma said after the game. “And it’s not like it’s the first time, right? I mean she’s been doing this for quite some time there.”

She interviewed with Tulane University, according to a report on NOLA.com. That job, however has been filled.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Tomekia Reed was Jackson State’s women’s basketball recruiting coordinator from 2006-2009. While there, she served as the top assistant also worked with post players at JSU and served as the team’s academic liaison. Other responsibilities included strength and conditioning liaison, player development, community service coordinator, and summer basketball camp coordinator.
