Shy Odom, once the future of the Howard University men’s basketball program, is headed into the NCAA transfer portal.
The sophomore from Boston, MA made his announcement via social media on Thursday.
“First, I’d like to thank my family for helping me get this far. Without my support system I wouldn’t be who I am today,” Odom wrote. “Thank you Kerry Davis for welcoming me into this historic community over the past two years. I personally thank Coach Blakeney and staff for allowing me to be apart of this program. With that being said, I’ll be entering the transfer portal.”
Shy Odom entered Howard University in the fall of 2023 as a three-star prospect out of Sierra Canyon High School in California where he played alongside Bronny James. He appeared in 31 games with 23 starts as a freshman, averaging just under 11 points per game while shooting 54 percent and grabbing nearly five rebounds per game. He also helped Howard win its first MEAC title in 31 years and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. He ended the season putting up 15 points and eight rebounds in the NCAA Tournament against Kansas.
With several of 2023’s star players out via the NCAA transfer portal, Odom’s sophomore season got off to a promising start as he scored a career-high 22 points in a close loss against Georgia Tech in early November. But he was hit with the injury bug, causing him to miss the meat of the 2023-2024 season. Odom played the final few weeks of the regular season but was held out of the MEAC Tournament as Howard managed to repeat with him on the sidelines. Odom played just six minutes in Howard’s NCAA Tournament game against Wagner scoring two points in that limited action.
