When it comes to Norfolk State University basketball, hanging banners is the expectation. NSU secured one banner on Thursday night, claiming an outright MEAC regular season title with a decisive win over Howard.
The goal according to the players and head coach Robert Jones was to leave no doubt that the Spartans were the MEAC’s top team in the regular season.
“We just wanted to lock in and make sure we send seniors out the right way and make sure that everybody know that we the champs,” grad student Christian Ings said after the game.
That mission has been accomplished. Norfolk State finished the regular season with a 21-10 record, going 11-3 in conference play to earn the team a nice dinner.
“We’ll go get a nice meal as a team and things like that. Try to celebrate a little bit because these guys do work hard at it,” Jones said after Thursday’s win. “Even though we haven’t achieved the ultimate goal, you got to reward the soldiers, man. They’ve done a lot this this year. So we got to reward them. It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t do something for them. So tomorrow we get a nice meal at a nice restaurant and things like that.”
