NCAA Division II: Three HBCU women’s squads in the hunt

The Division II NCAA Tournament features three HBCUs, each facing tough opponents.

The Division II NCAA Tournament brackets are out and a total of three teams will represent HBCUs in the race for the national title.

Fayetteville State and Miles College, the CIAA and SIAC champions, will be representing in the 64-team field as will West Virginia State.

Fayetteville State was awarded a no. 3 seed after winning the CIAA. FSU will take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania (21-7) after bringing home the CIAA title and coming in with an impressive record of 27-2 overall. It is led by CIAA Player of the Year Aniylah Bryant, who also won the Most Outstanding Player in the CIAA Tournament.

NCAA Division II
Miles College is headed to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Miles College will have its work cut out for it. Miles received the SIAC’s automatic bid by knocking off Kentucky State on Sunday in the conference title game. It will be rewarded with the eighth-seed, which means it will have to take on no. 1 seed Valdosta State. VSU is currently 29-2. 

Rounding out the field of HBCUs in the NCAA Division II Tournament is West Virginia State University. WVSU (21-10) made a run at the Mountain East Conference title, losing in the championship game to Fairmont State. West Virginia State will take on no. 1 seed Gannon, which comes in at 32-2.
