Grambling State holds off Alabama A&M, secures SWAC title

Grambling State

Grambling State recorded its sixth straight win, handing Alabama A&M a 74-73 loss in a back-and-forth contest at the Event Center on Thursday evening. The Tigers went into halftime with a five-point lead, which was enough to survive the Bulldogs’ second half push.

The win improved Grambling State’s SWAC record to 14-3, securing the regular season title and a number one seed in next week’s SWAC Tournament.

This win was led by a balanced scoring effort for Grambling State. Tra’Michael Moton led the scoring with 17 points. Jalen Johnson added 14, while Jourdan Smith also contributed 13 points. The Tigers made a concerted effort to absorb contact and convert it into points. They drew 24 fouls on the defense, which led to a season-high 28 points on 85% shooting from the charity stripe. Efficiency metrics evaluated the offense at an average of 1.05 points scored per possession on 61% true shooting.

Offense was not the issue for the Bulldogs. They scored 73 points on 45% shooting from the field. Omari Peek led the way, putting up 22 points to go along with five boards. Cameron Tucker also contributed, adding another 10 points.

  • Grambling State committed eight unforced turnovers (11% of possessions)
  • AAMU’s bench outscored GSU’s bench 33 to 16
  • The attendance of the game at the Event Center was 3,213

Each team has its next game on March 9. Grambling State takes on struggling Alabama State at Dunn-Oliver Acadome, where the Tigers will look to extend their winning streak. Meanwhile, Alabama A&M will try to turn its home stand around when they meet a Southern side riding the momentum from a win in its last outing. That one will be played at the Event Center.
