Dawn Staley, head coach of the no. 1 team in America, took time to recognize Jackson State women’s basketball and head coach Tomekia Reed for making some history of its own.
Jackson State received one vote in the Associated Press poll – a major accomplishment for any non-Power Five program. Especially an HBCU.
JSU head coach Tomekia Reed took time to comment on her program getting the vote via Twitter.
“We always seek to do something that has never been done in our program as we look to continue to elevate the bar each year,” Reed tweeted on her X account. “But to receive an email saying we received a vote for the AP Poll is beyond my imagination!!! Lord I thank you!! To whoever voted for us THANK YOU!!”
Dawn Staley responded to Reed’s tweet with an affirmation of her own.
“You’d have another one if I was a voter!” Staley tweeted. “Keep doing the BELIEVABLE.”
Staley and South Carolina are currently 29-0 as it prepares for the SEC Tournament. Her teams have routinely faced HBCUs in both the regular season as well as the NCAA Tournament.
Jackson State is currently 21-6 overall and 16-0 in SWAC play and secured its fifth-consecutive SWAC regular season title under Tomekia Reed on Monday.
