Auburn HC Hugh Freeze to hire Jackson State OC, per report

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze is expected to bring Jackson State football offensive coordinator Maurice Harris.

Harris is expected to join Freeze at Auburn, according to a report by Zach McKinnell.

Harris and Hugh Freeze have worked together in three programs – Liberty, Ole Miss, & Arkansas State. Harris spent four seasons as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Liberty while Freeze was the head coach. He was hired by Jackson State head coach T.C. Taylor as offensive coordinator in February 2023 after Freeze accepted the Auburn coaching job.

Prior to joining Hugh Freeze at Auburn, Harris spent seven seasons at Ole Miss (2012-18) working as a tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Harris, who also spent the 2006 season at Ole Miss as Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations,  helped the tight ends play a part in the high-powered and up-tempo offensive style run by Freeze.

Harris was tight ends coach at Arkansas State from 2008 through 2011.

Jackson State’s offense performed well in Harris’ lone season at the helm. It led the SWAC in total offense, accumulating just under 390 yards per game. It finished second in the SWAC in passing yards and touchdowns and led the conference in passing efficiency. JSU’s running game finished third in yards and touchdowns.

This news comes on the heels of Jackson State reportedly losing defensive coordinator Jonathan Bradley to South Alabama.
