Tennessee State basketball to play SWAC/HBCUs in non-conference

Tennessee State will matchup against a team from the SWAC as well as an in-state rival.

NASHVILLE — The schedule for Tennessee State men’s basketball is set for the 2019-20 season.

After returning nine of the previous team for his first year at the helm, the Tigers roster under head coach Brian “Penny” Collins’ looks a little different for year two. Over the signing period, Collins brought in ten student-athletes, including an ESPN three-star recruit, a JUCO All-American, three Power 5 transfers and two JUCO top-50 athletes. The average height of the new squad is 6-5 with eight standing 6-6 or taller.

This year’s slate includes high-profile matchups against Texas Tech (Nov. 21), San Diego State (Nov. 25) and Indiana State (Dec. 18), as well as a trip to the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational against Cal Poly, which will be followed by a game against LIU Brooklyn or North Florida.

Eight more non-conference games mark the schedule, including Alabama A&M (Nov. 5), Chattanooga (Nov. 9), Chicago State (Dec. 6), Fordham (Dec. 15) and Blue Mountain (Dec. 21), as well as rematches against 2018-19 opponents Lipscomb (Nov. 12), Fisk (Nov. 18) and Little Rock (Dec. 10).

The Tigers follow the non-conference schedule with Ohio Valley play kicking off at home, Jan. 2 against Eastern Illinois.
