Former NCCU star killed

A young man who two years ago helped North Carolina Central claim a conference football title is no longer with us. Former NCCU defensive end Ty Brown is dead at the age of 24, according to several former teammates and coaches, as well as family members.

“Ty was a great man, teammate, and Eagle,” NCCU head coach Jerry Mack said. “He was one of our leaders from the 2014 championship season. I will always remember Ty Brown as the ultimate teammate that would do anything for his brothers. My heart is heavy; he will truly be missed.”

Details are still emerging as to exactly what happened. Brown posted earlier this week that he had passed the state final for the basic law enforcement academy and was set to graduate on Dec. 20.

A Charlotte native, Brown was one of the heroes in NCCU’s 2014 upset of A&T, recording six tackles, three sacks and forcing a fumble in what would be his final collegiate game. A second-team All-MEAC selection that season, Brown earned a 2015 tryout with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brown family and NCCU.
