St. Augustine’s University officials announced that two assistants, Tim Chavous and Jonathan Kelly, Sr. will serve as interim head coaches for the next two weeks as it determines the fate of head coach Michael Morand. Morand was put on administrative leave on Wednesday for two weeks pending an investigation.
No reason was given for Morand’s leave, but sources tell HBCU Gameday that it stems from a recent incident. The coach was reportedly found asleep in his car, with it running, just after 6 a.m. near a residential part of campus, earlier this week.
Morand began last season as an assistant coach, but took over as interim when former head coach Henry Costa was fired during the season. St. Aug has already had a rough start to its football season, starting off 0-2 with a shutout loss to FCS North Carolina Central 72-0 and CIAA foe Virginia Union 42-7. Saturday’s game with Elizabeth City State is set to be its home opener.
St. Aug officials have no further comment on the situation.
