The Alcorn State Braves have one goal in mind this year, repeat as HBCU National Champions. With a more lucrative prize available this year, the Celebration Bowl, Alcorn has even more motivation to
continue what it started last year.
Alcorn will return just about all its weapons from its extremely proficient offense from last year.
Preseason Offensive Player of the Year John Gibbs returns as Alcorn’s quarterback. Along with Gibbs, running backs Arron Baker and Darryan Ragsdale return to anchor the run game. Wide Receivers Jordan Payne, Charles Hughes, Brandon Vessell, and Tollette George and return as capable targets for Gibbs.
Alcorn State opens the season against 2014 Orange Bowl Champion Georgia Tech on Sept. 3rd. The only other non-conference game is against Concordia College. As for SWAC play, Alcorn is favored against every opponent. Alcorn’s toughest tests will be against Grambling State, Southern, and Jackson State.
Players to Watch:
Offense:
QB, John Gibbs: The senior quarterback looks to cement his legacy at Alcorn State. Gibbs runs the offense with precision and is the focal point of the offense’s success. Expect to see similar numbers this season as Gibbs has everything he needs to have another stellar season.
Defense:
DB, Warren Gatewood: Gatewood finished last year with 3 interceptions and 16 pass breakups.
Defenses may shy away from Gatewood’s side this year, but if he’s tested, he is sure to make some big plays this year.
Best case scenario: 10-1 (regular season)
Worst case scenario: 8-3
