Alcorn State salutes hoops legend Davey L. Whitney

The college basketball world lost a giant last month when former Texas Southern and Alcorn State coach Davey L. Whitney died. A memorial was held for the College Basketball Hall of Famer on Saturday at the basketball complex at ASU that bares his name.

// Whitney began his collegiate coaching career at Texas Southern, but it was his time at Alcorn State that earned him legendary status. Whitney, aka “The Wiz” coached Alcorn for 27 seasons, leading them to 12 SWAC titles during his tenure. He became the first coach to lead an HBCU to a win in both the NIT and NCAA Division II Tournament. He finished his career with a 562-364 record.
