Virginia Union looking for new hoops coach

Virginia Union will be under the direction of its third coach in as many seasons when it returns to the court next season. Basketball coach Tony Sheals has been reassigned, according to VUU athletic director Joe Taylor.

“We’ve got a search committee consisting of people like Ben Wallace (former VUU and NBA star) and Ray Anderson (current Panthers player),” Taylor told the Richmond Free Press.

Assistant Derek Thompson, a former Morris Brown coach, will take over day-to-day operations as the team looks to find a replacement for Sheals. He signed a three-year deal with the Richmond, VA school just last year, going 9-18 in his lone season guiding the program.

The new coach will be VUU’s fourth since the 2008-2009 season after having one coach, David Robbins, for 30 years.
