FAMU to name Buffalo’s Alex Wood as coach

By Steven J. Gaither

Christmas has come early in Tallahassee. After months of speculation, FAMU has named Alex Wood as its new head coach according to Jordan Culver of the Tallahasee Democrat.

// Wood served as wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator as well as interim head coach at Buffalo in 2014. He will serve as FAMU’s full-time replacement to Earl Holmes, who was fired by former AD Kellen Winslow Sr.

“I’m excited about being able to name a coach with the experience, success and qualifications of Coach Wood,” interim AD  Nelson Townsend said.

He was not one of the initial eight candidates identified as a being in the running for the job by the school a few weeks ago.

Townsend has over 30 years of experience in the NFL and pro ranks, including a two-year stint at Southern in the mid-1980s and a head coaching job at James Madison from 1995-1998. His overall coaching record is 25-24.
