Another week, another blowout win and another drop in the national polls for Winston-Salem State. WSSU dropped to no. 16 in the AFCA Division II poll, despite a solid 37-0 win over CIAA foe Johnson C. Smith.
This marks the second week in a row that WSSU has dropped a spot in the rankings after a big win over a conference rival. It dropped from 14 to 15 last week despite beating Chowan 77-30. This week’s drop may be even more troubling as five ranked teams lost and WSSU still dropped despite putting together its first shutout of the year.
The problem for WSSU has been it’s level of competition. Though at one time all three of WSSU’s out of conference opponents were ranked, none of them are now. And the CIAA has taken a step back from where it was last season. Still, a team that has lost two regular season games in three-and-a-half years can’t be happy with falling after winning its fourth-straight game.
