Jackson State Wins SWAC Baseball Title

Jackson State’s baseball squad made headlines earlier this month when its bus caught on fire. Two weeks later, they are the SWAC Champs thanks to a 9-8 win over Alabama State.

Desmond Russell allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings for the win. Alexander Juday stepped in the final two innings, giving up one run for the save.

Both teams traded leads in a high-hitting game. The Tigers had 17 hits, while the Hornets posted 12. But JSU’s bats came up big in the sixth, scoring three runs to take the 8-7 lead and barely held on.

Richard Amion hit one of the Hornets’ three home runs to cut JSU’s lead 9-8 in the eighth. But Juday came through in the bottom of the ninth, striking out Marcus Swint with a runner on to end the game.

All nine batters in the Tigers’ lineup recorded at least one hit, including Melvin Rodriguez (two RBIs) and Charles Tillery (one RBI) each going 3-for-4.
