Yesterday we broke news of Greg Jackson being fired from Delaware State. It’s unusual for a college coach to be let go in-season, so many folks are still scratching their heads. Word on the street is a Grambling-style player revolt (refusal to practice) was brewing. With a lack of recent success, including a 4-15 record this season, apparently giving up Jackson was viewed as the quicker fix.

“I would just say that Greg has devoted 14 years to DSU and we’re grateful for that,” said DelState director of athletics Candy Young. “This was a situation, as we begin to look at the future, that we want to create a positive winning environment.”
We don’t have the details, but there is one fact that we do know. Several players from last year’s team opted not to return. Tahj Tate declared for the draft, while Amere May (St. Aug) and Bryan Scott (Winston-Salem State) bolted for the CIAA. Also, Jackson’s slow-it-down pace didn’t seem very player-friendly or effective in person (against NCCU) or on TV (against NC A&T). His team seemed to do better when he loosened the reigns and let them use their athleticism.
Jackson has had a successful career, winning at NC Central before he left for DSU, so it’s very likely he’ll coach again. It seems that after 14 years, a new start was needed by all.

This seems to be about the players being dissatisfied with the coach and his style whereas Grambling was about more much (and a lot of HBCUs are going through it)
