Anim Dankwah has been signed to the NFL practice squad of the Washington Commanders. Dankwah, who played his college football at Washington D.C. HBCU Howard University is 6-foot-8 and weighs 353 pounds, making the offensive lineman from Ghana one of the biggest players on the field every time he steps onto one.
Dankwah had an impressive college career at Howard University. In 2023, he was named to the All-MEAC First Team and helped Howard win a share of the MEAC regular season championship, something the team hadn’t done since 1993. His performance caught the attention of NFL teams, and after college, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent. Although he didn’t make their 53-man roster, the Washington Commanders saw his potential and have added him to their practice squad.
Anim Dankwah was born in Ghana and played high school football in Canada before going to Howard University. Now, as he continues to develop his skills, he has the chance to make a name for himself in the NFL. We spoke with Dankwah during his senior year at Howard to discuss his path from Ghana to Canada to an HBCU.
“So they [his new high school] had something called the ‘get ready program’ for all the freshmen to come and get acquainted with the school. The first thing we had to do was a scavenger hunt where we had to find certain rooms in the school,” Dankwah expressed. “One of the rooms I had to find was the athletic room, so boom one of the coaches sees me and says ‘You ever thought about playing football’ but I don’t know what football is. ‘You’re big enough so you should come and try out.” From that tryout, he has blossomed into an NFL-caliber football player looking to make the most of his opportunity on the practice squad.
