South Carolina HBCU adds new band director

Alabama A&M and Winston-Salem State University alumnus Matthew R. Goodman III has been named the Director of Bands at HBCU Allen University in Columbia South Carolina. Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, Goodman graduated from WSSU before earning his master’s degree in music education at Alabama A&M University in 2017. He brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new position.

During his time at AAMU, Goodman served as a graduate assistant for the Marching Maroon and White Band (MMW) and Conductor of the Pep Band. He officially assumed the role of Director of Bands at Allen University on July 1, 2024.

“I have always been an advocate of HBCUs,” said Goodman. “It brings me joy to know that I will get to serve through instrumental music education, which I am extremely passionate about.”

Following his graduation from AAMU, Goodman spent two years as the Head Band Director at Handley High School in Roanoke, Alabama. During his tenure, he launched the “Miles for Music”  campaign, jogging from Roanoke to New Orleans and raising over $80,000 to enable his band to perform at the Sugar Bowl.

In 2019, Goodman took on the role of Director of Bands at Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove, Alabama, becoming the first African American to hold the position at both schools. Reflecting on his career, Goodman expressed a mix of emotions.

“I will miss my students at Pleasant Grove, but I am excited to recruit them to Allen University and offer them band scholarships. My mission to guide students to success will continue here at Allen.”

Goodman also says his time with the MMW and AAMU Director of Bands, Carlton J. Wright, significantly improved his musicianship and leadership skills, aiding him in achieving his goal of advancing into higher education.

“While at AAMU, I gained many experiences that have prepared me for this role,” he said. “‘Start Here, Go Anywhere,’ – I am proof that this is true. I will always remember that service is truly sovereignty. I am most looking forward to being a conduit of positive change and shining a positive light on Allen University, The Band of Gold, and all HBCUs.”
