De-Fanged: Mitchell Reportedly Out As Coppin’s Coach

Big news out of Baltimore. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ron “Fang” Mitchell has coached his last game at Coppin State.

Mitchell is one of the modern legends of HBCU basketball coaching. He’s been at Coppin for nearly 30 years and is the architect of one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history, Coppin’s historic win over second-seeded South Carolina in 1997.

Mitchell took over at Coppin in 1986. His team’s dominated the conference in the 90s, winning at least a share of the regular season title every year but 1991. He led the Eagles to four MEAC Championships, the last of which came in 2008. His overall record at Coppin is 429-417, including a 12-20 record in 2014.

The Sun reports that the announcement that his contract won’t be renewed will be announced on Friday.
