FAMU Drawing Heat After Dropping Scholarship Offers Hours Before Signing Day

In a few hours, thousands of student-athletes around the country will announce where they plan on playing college football as part of National Signing Day. Hialeah (FL) High offensive guard Dave Montas planned on officially signing with Florida A&M and playing football for the storied FCS program. It looks like that won’t happen, and FAMU is about to take some heat from it.

FAMU originally offered Montas a scholarship last March, and he committed a few months later. But according to this tweet, his plan to play for the Rattlers came to an abrupt end Tuesday night.

This type of thing happens all the time for various reasons. If this is true, we don’t know why the coaching staff at FAMU decided not to go through with the offer. But with the emergence of social media, don’t be surprised if you hear about this again. And you can bet that other FCS schools will use this as a strike against the Rattlers.

Update: Apparently, FAMU rescinded its scholarship offer due to Montas’ test scores. Here’s what the player and his coach, Marc Berman told Al.com.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js “It hurts because they were telling me I was good (academically),” Montas told AL.com. “If I wasn’t good, they were leading me on. They should have seen this coming.

“A lot of schools came in with interest but were concerned with my test scores and I respect that. But they told me up front.”

Both Montas and Berman told AL.com the offensive lineman met the NCAA’s full-qualifier status based on the sliding scale.

The offer being pulled, Berman said, was a result of too many commitments.

“FAMU had too many offers,” Berman told AL.com on Tuesday night. “They shouldn’t wait until 6:20 p.m. the night before National Signing Day. They shattered the kid’s dreams.”
