Michigan football transfer headed to FAMU

A Michigan football transfer is joining HBCU national champion FAMU.

HBCU national champion FAMU is picking up a transfer from FBS national champion Michigan football.

Jerome Nichols, a 6-0 linebacker, has committed to FAMU. He made his announcement via Twitter on Sunday.

The Belleville, Michigan product was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2021.

A three-year starter at Renaissance High School, and coached by Drake Wilkins, Nichols led the Public School League (PSO) with 105 tackles in eight games in 2019, adding six fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and an interception. He was a Detroit Free Press All-Detroit team honorable mention in 2019 and Legacy All-Star Game Defensive MVP.

Nichols didn’t see action for Michigan football as a freshman in 2020 or as a sophomore in 2021. He made his collegiate debut playing special teams against Hawaii and he contributed on special teams against UConn (Sept. 17). He saw action in one game in 2023, assisting on two tackles against Indiana.

FAMU went 12-1 last season, winning the SWAC Championship and Celebration Bowl under recently departed head coach Willie Simmons. Nichols will join a FAMU defense that brings a lot of talent back, but does have some holes to fill — including SWAC Defensive Player of The Year Isaiah Major at linebacker.
