Jackson State is beginning the process of getting an AD and Alabama A&M AD Dr. Paul Bryant’s name has been thrown out. But a source with intimate knowledge of the situation tells HBCU Gameday that he has not been contacted by JSU as of Thursday afternoon.
That directly contrasts with a report from Kyle T. Mosley of Sports Illustrated’s HBCU Legends. Mosley wrote on Thursday that Jackson State had contacted Bryant about its vacant position and that mutual interest existed.
Mosley attributed his report to multiple sources. HBCU Gameday reached out to a source with intimate knowledge of the situation. They firmly denied that any contact had taken place between Jackson State and Bryant as of Thursday afternoon.
The vacancy opened Wednesday when Robinson was approved by the Texas Southern Board of Regents to become its new athletic director. Jackson State has since named Alyse Wells-Kilbert interim director of athletics.
Jackson State job will draw attention
The Jackson State opening is one of the most visible athletic administration jobs in the HBCU landscape. The program’s history, fan base, national profile and recent success all make the position attractive. Robinson helped elevate Jackson State during his tenure through high-profile hires, championships and increased national exposure.
His departure was always likely to create immediate speculation about potential successors. Bryant’s name is understandable in that context.
Working his HBCU magic
At Alabama A&M, Bryant has overseen a period of renewed momentum across athletics, including increased attention around facilities, sponsorship opportunities and the broader profile of the department.
That work has made him a notable figure within the SWAC and across HBCU athletics. Still, as of Thursday afternoon, HBCU Gameday’s source says Jackson State has not contacted him.
Dr. Paul Bryant speculation reflects SWAC movement
Movement between schools inside the SWAC is nothing new.
Administrators and coaches regularly emerge as candidates for other jobs within the conference, particularly when high-profile openings become available. Jackson State’s search is likely to generate interest well beyond one name.
The school is coming off a period in which its athletic department became one of the most visible in Black college sports, giving the next athletic director both a strong platform and significant expectations.
Alabama A&M
For Alabama A&M, any outside interest in Bryant could also place additional attention on his current role and the work he has done in Huntsville. Making sure he’s happy is likely to at least incur a discussion, if not a sweetened deal.
Mosley has reported that contact has occurred. HBCU Gameday has been told by a source with intimate knowledge that it has not.
As Jackson State begins its search, more names are likely to surface.
For now, the Bryant question remains unresolved — with conflicting sourcing around whether the process has advanced beyond speculation.
