Charlie Neal Day HBCU Go

HBCU Go will dedicate its Saturday programming to the life and legacy of legendary broadcaster Charlie Neal, whose voice helped introduce generations of viewers to Black college sports.

Beginning Saturday, Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. ET, the network will present “Charlie Neal Day,” a marathon featuring memorable games and moments from Neal’s decades-long broadcasting career.

The network will also honor Neal with a moment of silence during the first football game of its HBCU conference-wide coverage this season.

Charlie Neal helped bring HBCU sports to national television

Neal died in May following an illness at the age of 80. His career was intertwined with the growth of HBCU sports on national television.

In 1980, Neal joined Black Entertainment Television (BET) at its inception, becoming the network’s lead play-by-play announcer and executive producer for sports. His work helped establish a national television platform for HBCU football and basketball at a time when Black college athletics received limited exposure from major networks.

For countless fans, Neal became one of the defining voices of HBCU sports.

He later continued that work with ESPN and HBCU Go. Neal also called the first football game televised by ESPNU, extending a broadcasting career that connected multiple generations of Black college athletics.

HBCU Go celebrates a broadcasting pioneer

Neal’s impact went far beyond calling games. He routinely incorporated HBCU history into broadcasts, connecting contemporary athletes with legends such as Walter Payton and Jerry Rice while giving viewers context about the institutions and communities represented on the field.

His contributions earned induction into the MEAC Hall of Fame, CIAA Hall of Fame and Black College Football Hall of Fame. In 2023, Neal became the first broadcaster from the HBCU ranks to receive the prestigious Chris Schenkel Award.

Saturday’s marathon gives black college football fans another opportunity to hear the unmistakable voice that helped tell their story.

“Charlie Neal Day” begins at 9 a.m. ET Saturday on HBCU GO.
