Mississippi Valley State is coming off of two consecutive 2-9 seasons, and hasn’t had a winning season since 2006, but with Rick Comegy being the head coach, a winning season may come to Itta Bena sooner rather than later. Yet still, the Delta Devils are still picked to finish last in the SWAC East for many reasons.
It is no secret that MVSU lacks the talent to really compete in the SWAC as of now, and this may really show given that All-SWAC WR Julian Stafford has graduated. For MVSU to compete and try to win multiple SWAC games, they will need to replace Stafford’s production.
Valley isn’t favored in many games this season, and the first three games on the schedule will be especially tough for the Delta Devils. The Delta Devils begin the season against FBS New Mexico. MVSU then faces the two participants of the 2014 SWAC Championship in back-to-back weeks: Southern University and Alcorn State University.
Players to Watch
Offense QBs Quantavius Peterson and Dontrinell Scott: Whichever guy plays most this season, the success of MVSU’s season will rely heavily on the performance of the quarterback. Strong QB play is the only way for MVSU to upset some teams and have a record approaching .500.
Defense DB Le’Trey Jones: Jones led MVSU’s defense in tackles last year. He will have to play a big part in any improvements of one of the statistically worst defenses in the SWAC.
