NFL prospect Erick Hunter runs blazing time for linebacker

Erick Hunter

NFL Draft hopeful Erick Hunter used an HBCU showcase to show why Morgan State believes its star linebacker can make the jump to the next level.

Hunter participated Monday in the HBCU Showcase & International Player Pathway Pro Day at the Washington Commanders’ practice facility in Ashburn, Virginia. The event gave him a chance to perform in front of NFL evaluators with the 2026 NFL Draft now less than a month away.

For players from HBCU programs, events like this can be critical. They offer another chance to prove speed, movement, and football instincts in front of decision-makers. A strong showing can lead to a late-round look, priority undrafted free agent interest, or a rookie minicamp invite.

Hunter embraced that opportunity.

“Monday at the HBCU Showcase was just another opportunity to prove what I’ve been working on in the dark,” Hunter said. “I came out there focused, fast, and physical. I want to show teams I can run, cover, and make plays sideline to sideline. I’m never satisfied, though — it’s always more to prove. That was just a glimpse of what I bring.”

He also ran a fast time for a linebacker, clocking in at 4.48 seconds in the 40 yard dash. That number would have been third amongst his position at the NFL combine.

A dominant final season

The Morgan State linebacker built his NFL Draft case with a big-time senior season in 2025. The Capitol Heights native started all 12 games and led the MEAC with 102 total tackles. He also posted 53 solo stops, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, five quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles, and an interception.

One of his biggest moments came against Norfolk State. In that game, Hunter returned a blocked kick 90 yards for a touchdown, adding a signature play to an already loaded résumé.

His production helped him earn major recognition across the FCS and HBCU football landscape. Hunter was named a Stats Perform FCS Second-Team All-American, a Phil Steele FCS Third-Team All-American, and an FCS Football Central All-American. He also earned first-team All-MEAC honors, became a Buck Buchanan Award finalist, and received BOXTOROW HBCU All-American recognition.

Morgan State believes in Hunter

Morgan State head coach Damon Wilson said Hunter looked the part in Ashburn.

“I think Erick did exactly what we expected him to do,” Wilson said. “Erick has put a lot of work in, prepared for the opportunity, and taken full advantage of it. He displayed what hard work looks like on one of the biggest stages.”

Hunter also leaves Morgan State with a lasting legacy. He finished second on the program’s all-time tackles list with 298 career stops.

Now the focus shifts to the next step. Erick Hunter could hear his name called in the NFL Draft. Or he could earns his shot another way. What Hunter has made clear is that Morgan State has produced another defender ready for the pro game.
