In March of 2019, Chris Paul saw the “Text HORNS to 71777” social media campaign, encouraging Winston-Salem State alumni to support an athletic scholarship initiative. He responded by making a significant financial pledge to support the campaign as well as the institution. As a response to Paul’s generosity, Winston-Salem State University alumnus Winston Robinson introduced the idea of utilizing the institution’s facilities to extend the goals, ideals and values of Paul’s initiative; Go Hoop Day. On June 23rd, Winston-Salem State University will host the first annual Epic Open Run on Go Hoop Day in the Donald J. “Epic Open Run on Go Hoop Day is the ultimate catalyst to invigorate the relationship between Winston-Salem as a city, Winston-Salem State University as an institution and the Paul family as philanthropist and champions of community,” Robinson said. “Basketball is also the great unifier. The game has no race, religion or political belief. Therefore, we will harness that power of establishing common ground, to all of the citizens of this beautiful city.”
