Bowie State raising money for former basketball player fighting cancer

The CIAA Tournament is around the corner, but a former Bowie State basketball player is fighting something much bigger than a trophy.

Former BSU player Rasheem King is currently battling Stage 3 sarcoma cancer. His alma mater is raising money online and at Saturday’s game to help him as he pursue’s medical treatment in New York.

“This money will go toward helping him with every day things,” Kaitlyn D’Annibale, Bowie State trainer told My Fox DC. “When he goes to his appointments, he has to take a taxi because he doesn’t have a ride.”

The 24-year-old has already overcome a lot in his young life. His mother died when he was two, and his grand parents that raised him have died as well.

Despite those challenges, King left his mark at Bowie State.

“Off the court, on the court, he’s always making jokes,” said assistant basketball coach and former teammate Bryan Wilson. “On the court, he’s a warrior. We played the same position, so we’re battling every day in practice.”

Not determined to just beat cancer, Bowie State coach Darrell Brooks says he has another goal.

“He says, ‘Coach, when I beat this cancer, I’m going to come back and I’m going to play for you,’” Brooks recalled. “He says, ‘Even though you are softer now than when I played,’ he said I’m going to come back and play for you. I got to get some of your toughness back.”
