Hampton Women, BCU Men Win MEAC Track Titles

Day Three of the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships saw a new champion crowned and another defend its title. Bethune-Cookman took home the men’s championship while the Hampton women leapfrogged its competition to win yet another conference title.

BCU came into the day at the top of the men’s standings and stayed there thanks to another solid day, finishing with 132 points. North Carolina A&T claimed runner-up honors with 101 points. Defending champion Hampton finished third.

“It was a hard fought battle and a lot of great competition from all teams,” Cooper said. “This has been one of the best MEAC (Championships) that I have been at, and our team persevered.”

While the Day Two leader finished the job on the mens’ side, the Hampton women jumped from the middle-of-the pack to the top of the hill with a big Saturday. Hampton swept the relays, winning both the 4x100m and 4x400m crowns to pick up its 11th MEAC title, and third in a row.

“We started off slow and made some mistakes on Thursday and Friday,” Hampton coach Maurice Pierce said. “I know the type of team we have and the talent level we have. We are a championship team and at the end of the day, we’ll show up and represent as true champions and get it done. It was a total team effort.”
