WSSU Adds New FBS Recruits

Coming off of a national championship game appearance, there’s a lot of buzz around the Winston-Salem State football program. Much of it has to do with who will be suiting up for WSSU as the Rams have lost more than two dozen players from last season’s squad, including half of their starters.

On Saturday, WSSU hosted “Meet The Rams” the team’s annual fan day. The event gave students, alumni and fans a chance to interact face-to-face with the players prior to the start of the 2013 season. WSSU also unveiled it’s new look roster, which featured dozens of new players, including several former Division I players. We already knew names like E.J. Abrams-Ward (Tennessee) and Alfy Hill (Alabama) but some weren’t as familiar. Here’s a list of the players who could make an immediate impact.

D. J. Bunn, Free Safety

Former UNC defensive back D.J. Bunn will suit up for WSSU in 2013. (Reese News Photo)

Bunn spent two years at North Carolina before being dismissed from the team in July 2012. The 5’11, 185 pound junior is one of two former ACC players listed at free safety for WSSU.

Marke Powell, Linebacker

Powell spent two years at East Carolina before leaving the team prior to the 2012 season. He finished with 40 tackles in 2011 and should combine with D2 All-American Carlos Fields to form a fearsome linebacking corps.

Jerome Junior, Safety 

Josh Hunter, Linebacker

Hunter played in eight games for UNC as redshirt freshman in 2010 before leaving the team prior to the next season. The former Mallard Creek (Charlotte) star is listed as a junior.

Brian Davis, Offensive Line

Davis spent most of his time at Boston College as a backup, but should see plenty of playing time on a WSSU O-line that lost some starters. Davis will have one year of eligibility left.

Booker Nunley, Wide Receiver 

Former Wake Forest hurdler Booker Nunley will resume his football career at WSSU.

So this isn’t a true FBS transfer, as Nunley never actually suited up for Wake Forest in football. But the former hurdler was a standout at football powerhouse Garner (NC) High as a high schooler. The 6’2, 175 pound receiver is listed as a junior.

Quinton Alton, Defensive Line

Keaton may just be the biggest score on this list, literally and figuratively. The 6’7, 300 pound lineman was signed as a part of UNC’s 2010 recruiting class, but never played a down in Chapel Hill. Listed as a freshman, Keaton should be a big part of WSSU football for years to come.

Rashaan Williams, Wide Receiver  

Former JUCO standout Rashaan Williams could see a lot of balls his way this season.

Williams caught 61 balls for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. At 6’3, 202 pounds, Williams is a big receiver who is known for making big things happen after catching the ball.
