Big-Time Scorer Commits To WSSU

Southwest Guilford guard led his team to a 27-1 record in his senior season.

Winston-Salem State may still be smarting from its 69-67 loss to Slippery Rock in the NCAA Tourney, but there is a reason for optimism in Ramland. The Winston-Salem Journal’s John Dell reports that Southwest Guilford star Terrell Leach has committed to WSSU. The 6’0 guard averaged 33 points and eight rebounds per game last year. 30 points per game is good at any level, but considering high school games only last 32 minutes, that’s pretty spectacular.

Leach was nominated for the McDonald’s All-American game earlier this year, a few months after scoring a career-high 54 points. He told the Greensboro News and Record that Cleveland State, East Carolina and Witcha State had shown interest in him, but only WSSU had offered a full-ride.

The Rams will need all the scoring they can get with All-CIAA guard Justin Glover exhausting his eligibility. Leach and fellow incoming freshman Jamison Jeffers will get a chance to shine with both Glover and point guard Marcus Wells departing. Add in the solid recruiting class with All-CIAA selection WyKevin Bazemore returning and the solid rookie season of Michel-Ofik Nzege, and the future looks bright for the Rams.

Earlier this week, Leach was named North Carolina’s District 7 Player of The Year. It’s remarkable the kid missed the second half of his junior year with a knee injury. Hasn’t affected his jumping ability, though. Leach told the Greensboro News and Record he put in his first dunk in the seventh grade.
