HBCU football’s MEAC/SWAC Challenge grew its television audience in 2026 while navigating a new, more crowded opening-weekend landscape.
The matchup between Howard and Alabama A&M averaged 1.2 million viewers on ABC and peaked at 1.7 million. ESPN Events announced the figures Wednesday, citing Nielsen Big Data + Panel measurement.
That average represented a 10 percent increase over last year. And it came during a weekend featuring more than 20 other games involving HBCUs.
The Challenge had to share attention with a full menu of games involving Black college programs. Fans had their own season openers to attend, teams to follow and results to track.
Even with those competing demands, the nationally televised showcase increased its average audience.
More HBCU games, continued drawing power
Howard supplied the on-field result, defeating Alabama A&M 31-24 in Atlanta. Howard’s Ja’Shawn Scroggins earned the game’s MVP award.
The television performance gave the event another significant result beyond the scoreboard.
According to ESPN Events, the 2026 matchup was the second-most-watched MEAC/SWAC Challenge since 2024. It also ranked among ESPN’s most-watched college football games of the opening weekend.
TCU-North Carolina led that slate with 4.9 million average viewers and a peak of 5.8 million. NC State-Virginia averaged 3.2 million and peaked at 4 million.
The Challenge’s numbers offer evidence that a crowded HBCU football weekend can still accommodate a substantial national showcase.
The audience figures do not establish how individual games affected viewing decisions. They do show that the Challenge’s growth coincided with a weekend offering fans considerably more HBCU action.
For an event built around national exposure, that distinction deserves attention.

A national platform beyond the scoreboard
The Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff presented by Toyota pairs programs from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Its platform extends beyond the game itself. The event also puts HBCU bands, institutional identities and traditions before a national television audience.
That visibility remains valuable when schools across the country are simultaneously creating their own opening-weekend moments.
The Challenge opens ESPN Events’ HBCU football calendar. December’s Cricket Celebration Bowl presented by Toyota provides the other bookend at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, matching the MEAC and SWAC champions.
For 2026, the immediate takeaway is clear: more games involving HBCUs did not prevent the Challenge from growing its television audience.
It attracted more viewers while sharing the weekend with more than 20 other games involving HBCU programs.
