HBCU Football: Howard looks to regroup after Princeton loss

Howard University football heads into its bye week after a 30-13 loss to Princeton. Coach Larry Scott reflected on the team’s performance and shared what Howard needs to focus on moving forward. As one of the top HBCU football programs, Howard University is determined to use this time to recover and prepare for upcoming conference play.

Coach Scott expressed disappointment in the slow start. “We got off to a really uncharacteristic slow start for us in that game, putting ourselves into a hole with some early turnovers deep in our territory,” Scott said during the weekly MEAC coaches call. “We found ourselves in a deep, deep hole and battled to respond in the second half, but we couldn’t overcome the adversity.”

Despite the loss, Howard’s players never gave up. “The guys’ attitude was always to believe they could win. They didn’t quit,” Scott noted. Howard’s second-half adjustments led to some success, particularly in the run game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Penalties were also an issue that cost Howard several scoring opportunities. “We’ve been one of the least penalized teams in the past few seasons, but for whatever reason, we found ourselves being uncharacteristically penalized in this game,” Scott said.

As Howard takes a break during the bye week, Coach Scott plans to address these issues and get the team back on track. “This bye week couldn’t have come at a better time. We need to get healthy and attack the areas where we haven’t been playing to the level we should be,” Scott emphasized. The bye week also allows Howard’s players to focus on academics and recover from injuries before diving into conference play.

Howard will host Sacred Heart after the bye week and aims to improve in key areas before diving into its HBCU football schedule, the Bision is determined to return stronger and ready to compete in the MEAC.
