Florida A&M (1-1) vs Texas Southern (0-1)

Florida A&M (1-0) vs Texas Southern (0-1)

Florida A&M served notice on Saturday that winning in Bragg Stadium won’t be easy this year. FAMU dominated Texas Southern from start to finish on national television, claiming a 29-7 win in the inaugural Jake Gaither classic.

FAMU’s sophomore quarterback, Ryan Stanley got the scoring started with his legs, rushing for a 7-yard score to give his team the first touchdown of the FCS season in the first quarter.

Next up was junior running back Devin Bowers, who took off for a 25-yard score early in the second quarter, but the PAT was blocked and FAMU led 13-0. A few minutes later Stanley hit Brandon Norwood for a 36-yard touchdown pass and the route was on.

TxSu’s only score of the game came on a 30-yard pass to from Jay Christophe to Darvin Kidsy early in the fourth quarter after the game was all but decided. Christophe spent much of the day dodging FAMU defenders, as he was sacked three times and hit several more. He finished just 12-for-39 passing and an interception to go along with his touchdown strike.

It was a very solid showing for FAMU as it dominated time of possession 38:55 to 21:05 and held its opponent to just 202 yards of total offense and only 62 yards on the ground. Stanley finished 19-for-32 passing for 217 yards and no interceptions to go along with touchdowns on the ground and in the air.

FAMU won’t have long to bask in the glory of its feel-good win as it prepares for a long bus trip west to take on the SEC’s Arkansas next week. TxSu, meanwhile, will head back to Houston to face rival Prairie View in a Gulf Coast area dealing with weather concerns thanks to Hurricane Harvey.
