One of the best and most consistent HBCU products in the NFL in this millennium is hanging them up. Former Bethune-Cookman star and Detroit Lions defensive back Rashean Mathis has announced his retirement.
“It’s been a long 13 years, a great 13 years,” Mathis told DetroitLions.com. “I think its time for me to hang up the cleats. The Lord has blessed me with a long career and doing great on the field and inside the locker room. It’s time.”
Mathis became an immediate starter after he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He made his only appearance in the Pro Bowl in 2006.
He had a spectacular career at Bethune-Cookman College, picking off 14 passes as a senior en route to the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in Divsision I-AA football.
