TBT: Stephen Joyner Sr. talks CIAA Basketball History

The CIAA has had a lot of great players come and go, and Johnson C. Smith University’s Stephen Joyner Jr. has seen, played and coached against many of them. From starting out as Big House Gaines’ paperboy in Winston-Salem, to playing in the CIAA Tournament at Johnson C. Smith, to leading his alma mater to CIAA Championships, he’s pretty much seen every great player since the 1960s.

We talked to him about some of the league’s greatest players and coaches, and asked him to give us his all-time starting five. Check out the interview in HD.

Joyner is a great coach who is allowed to keep his job because of what he has accomplished throughout his career. Smith has been a .500 team for some years now and it looks like Joyner is just an average coach at this point. I really hope he steps aside after the season and allows someone else to coach the men's team. Joyner could retain his AD role and still raise money for the athletic department. I feel like his inability to recruit big men has finally caught up with him.
