HBCUs continue to thrive in FCS football attendance

The 2014 season could be considered a down year for HBCU football on the field, but the MEAC and SWAC plus Tennessee State did pretty darn good attendance-wise. Nine of the top 30 schools in terms of FCS attendance hail from HBCUs. Five of those schools hail from the SWAC, two from the MEAC and Tennessee State from the OVC.

Ninth-ranked Southern (15,416) was the only team in the top 10. North Carolina A&T was the MEAC’s top team averaging 14,524 fans per game, good for 11th.

The SWAC was the FCS’ best attended college football conference, averaging nearly 13,000 fans per game. The MEAC ranked sixth in the FCS, but saw an average increase of 311 fans per game, bucking a national trend.
