TBT: Winston-Salem State beats Hampton for 1987 CIAA Title

The year was 1987. Winston-Salem State traveled to Hampton,VA to redeem itself after four-straight losses in the CIAA Championship Game. Its opponent was the hometown team, Hampton University.

The game featured several NFL Draft picks, including Hampton’s running back Carl Painter and his WSSU counterpart, Broderick Graves, along with future Pro Bowler Yancy Thigpen at receiver for WSSU. WSSU also featured two defensive backs with NFL futures in Anthony Blaylock and Donald Frank.

It also featured legendary coach Bill Hayes as well as future WSSU and Hampton coach Connell Maynor.

Winston-Salem State would go on to win the game 22-12 in what would be Bill Hayes’ final game as WSSU head coach. From Willie Lanier in the booth to the halftime performance, this game is a complete classic.
