Both came out victorious in must-win games, with Virginia State downing Virginia Union 33-12 while Winston-Salem State held off Fayetteville State for a 17-7 win.

The two teams were set to meet in the CIAA Championship Game last season before an altercation involving members of both team’s led to the game’s cancellation, and gathered national headlines. Former VSU running back Lamont Britt was eventually charged with and convicted of assaulting Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson.
