HBCU Alums Thriving In CFL

When most fans think of pro football, the NFL is the only league that matters. And while it’s true that it is by far the most prestigious league, it isn’t the only one. The Canadian Football League is considered perhaps the best alternative to the NFL, and several of its alumni have gone on to make an impact in the NFL. It has also allowed several HBCU alums to continue their careers after they have left college. Check out these players, who were named to the league’s All-Star squads.

Will Ford, SC State 

One of the best running backs in MEAC history, Ford has made an impact with the Winnepeg Blue Bombers. The 5’8, 191 pound running back has rushed for nearly 600 yards and two touchdowns. He’s really shined on special teams, where he has returned two kicks for touchdowns.

Marquay McDaniel, Hampton

McDaniel was a three-time All-MEAC selection at Hampton, where he helped the Pirates win multiple conference titles while setting several records. He’s been in the CFL since 2007, and has continued to produce at the pro level. McDaniel finished fourth in the league in receiving yards (1,047) for the Calgary Stampeders.

Alex Hall, St. Aug

Hall played his ball at D2 St. Aug, where he was the first Falcon ever selected in the NFL Draft back in 2008. He recorded 38 tackles and three sacks while playing for the Browns, Cardinals and Giants. He’s found a home in the CFL, finishing the regular season with 16 sacks, good for second in the league. He and the Saskatchewan Roughriders will meet the BC Lions in the CFL West Semifinals on Saturday.
