Two months after his short stint at Virginia came to an end, quarterback Phillip Sims announced he will transfer to Winston-Salem State on Sunday night. Sims announcement, made via Twitter, has yet to be confirmed by WSSU.

Winston-Salem State head coach Connell Maynor told the Winston-Salem Journal’s John Dell Sims won’t be eligible in 2013.

“He’s not eligible for this year,” Coach Connell Maynor of the Rams said by telephone Monday morning. “But when you can get a big-time quarterback such as Phillip, it really does a lot for your program as we look ahead. He’s a heck of an athlete and he will obviously help us.”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsSims was considered a top quarterback prospect while at Chesapeake’s (VA) Oscar Smith HS. He left UVa in late May after being ruled ineligible. He played in all 12 games his lone season at Virginia, with four starts.

After transferring from Alabama following the 2011 season, Sims completed 132 of 231 passes for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns, sharing starting duties with Michael Rocco in 2012.

“He is a very talented young man who is blessed with some extraordinary athletic abilities,” said UVa. head coach Mike London. “I still believe Phillip Sims can and will be a successful person. We will do what we can to assist Phillip in continuing his academic and athletic opportunities elsewhere.”

Winston-Salem State has been the powerhouse team in black college football over the past few years, and transfers have been a big part of that formula. Last season’s team, the Division II runner had at 16 former D1 players, including starting quarterback Kameron Smith.

When asked about the newcomers for next season at last week’s media day, head coach Connell Maynor declined to go into much detail.

“We’ve got some transfers, but they aren’t starters yet,” he said. “We don’t give away any spots. You’ve got to earn them. If you don’t, you won’t be on the field.”

Maynor already added one former FBS quarterback prospect in this spring when he brought in former Tennessee Vol EJ Abrams-Ward. And then there’s former Grambling quarterback Anthony Carrothers, last year’s backup, who Maynor said is currently the front runner, and Rudy Johnson from Texas Southern.

Just another case of the rich getting richer. But for once, it’s nice to say that about an HBCU football program.
