Two months after his short stint at Virginia came to an end, quarterback Phillip Sims announced he will transfer to Winston-Salem State on Sunday night. Sims announcement, made via Twitter, has yet to be confirmed by WSSU.
“He’s not eligible for this year,” Coach Connell Maynor of the Rams said by telephone Monday morning. “But when you can get a big-time quarterback such as Phillip, it really does a lot for your program as we look ahead. He’s a heck of an athlete and he will obviously help us.”

“He is a very talented young man who is blessed with some extraordinary athletic abilities,” said UVa. head coach Mike London. “I still believe Phillip Sims can and will be a successful person. We will do what we can to assist Phillip in continuing his academic and athletic opportunities elsewhere.”

Winston-Salem State has been the powerhouse team in black college football over the past few years, and transfers have been a big part of that formula. Last season’s team, the Division II runner had at 16 former D1 players, including starting quarterback Kameron Smith.
