After reviving his career at Tuskegee, Derrick Washington is drawing interest from several NFL teams, including his hometown team. SB Nation’s Arrowhead Pride blog reports that Washington visited and worked out with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday in preparation for the NFL Draft. Washington also reportedly has a private visit with the New England Patriots scheduled soon.
Washington started his career at the University of Missouri, where he rushed for over 2,000 yards and 28 touchdowns in three seasons. His time at Missouri was cut short, however, after a sexual assault charge and conviction resulted in Washington being stripped of his scholarship. After serving four months in jail, Washington had scholarship offers rescinded at Eastern Washington and Winston-Salem State before landing at Tuskegee in 2012.
Washington displayed little signs of rust, rushing for 1679 yards and 14 touchdowns in his lone season at Tuskegee. Washington was named SIAC Player of The Year and was a Harlon Hill Trophy nominee. Now he’s hoping to continue his career on the NFL level.
Washington was one of nine players who worked out in front of NFL scouts at Tuskegee’s Pro Day last month. He also participated in the inaugural Raycom College Football All-Star Classic earlier this year.
The 6’1, 215 pound back could be a solid pickup for a team willing to take a chance on a player in a late round of the NFL Draft. Free agency is a more likely path for Washington, however. It worked out pretty well for Bowie State’s Issac Redman, as well as many other HBCU players.
