|Norfolk State’s 86-84 upset over no. 2 Missouri was recognized as one of the most memorable moments in NCAA history.|
It may only be December, but it’s never too early for March Madness. The NCAA unveiled a long list of honors to players, teams and moments in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the NCAA’s Men’s Basketball Tournament. Despite not having a single team or player recognized, two MEAC programs made the list in the moments category.
Hampton was recognized for its 2001 upset over Iowa State. The Pirates became just the fourth 15th seed to defeat a no. 2 seed. Tavaris Williams’ jumper gave Hampton the 58-57 win and launched them the history books.
Ironically, Hampton’s closest rival, Norfolk State was the other HBCU on the list. NSU was recognized for its 86-84 upset win over Missouri in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The Spartans were led by a big game from big man Kyle O’Quinn (26 points, 14 rebounds) who would later be selected by the Orlando Magic in the second round of the NBA Draft.
